After falling in love with the region and its potential for premium wine production, Ewen and Elissa Macpherson bought an old orchard property and established Symphony Hill Wines in Queensland's Granite Belt in 1996.
In partnership with Ewen's parents Bob and Jill Macpherson they developed the vineyard to its present high standard. At 1,000 metres elevation, with winter temperatures dropping below -10°C, the cool climate ripens distinct and complex flavours. The region's sandy loam soils, the result of granite boulders decomposing over thousands of years, provide excellent drainage. A thick covering of sugar cane mulch enhances the soil, tested every winter to gauge nutrient requirements.
Symphony Hill Wines' lead wines are its Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, markedly different to those grown at lower altitudes. Their Gewürztraminer is the stand out among a range of alternative varieties.
